India Jazz Suites
Date: Thursday, April 12, 2012 -

Centre for the Arts, Brock University presents India Jazz Suites At first glance, traditional Kathak dancer Pandit Chitresh Das and New York-based tap dancer Jason Samuels Smith are an unlikely pair, but the second these dancers bring their virtuoso footwork onto the stage, you will feel that they are rhythmic twins. Chitresh Das is a 67 year old master of the traditional Indian Kathak dancing style where he dances barefoot with up to three pounds of bells on each leg. Smith, on the other hand, is a 31 year old Emmy-award winning dance performer and choreographer from New York who is known for his fast footwork and uncanny tap style. Though age, culture and training divide these artists, their deep understanding of rhythm and dance bring them together in a powerful and transformative way. Their collaborative energy, skill and improvisation set to live music is a spectacle that will have you gasping for breath in excitement.
