The Township of West Lincoln is an agriculture-based community, consisting of many small villages spread over nearly 400 square kilometres of land. West Lincoln is the largest geographical area in the Niagara Region, with the smallest population base - fewer than 12,000 residents. It is located along the western border of the Niagara Peninsula.
Vegetable and grain crops are the primary products of local farmers. The largest community is Smithville, where its industrial park is growing quickly with automotive, packaging and agricultural industries. Companies often establish in West Lincoln due to the farm work ethic of the residents, low taxes and rural atmosphere. West Lincoln is situated in the western end of regional Niagara, about ten minutes south of the Queen Elizabeth Way.
Like many rural communities, West Lincoln is best discovered by a drive along its scenic backroads, through sprawling farmland and meandering rivers. Twenty Mile Creek and the Welland River offer canoeing and kayaking opportunities. Cyclists favour the quiet and scenic country roads.
Close to Niagara's popular wine route, West Lincoln offers a wide selection of rural Bed and Breakfasts for weekend getaways.
Country fairs and festivals are a mainstay in West Lincoln's villages. In Smithville, the two major events are the annual Frolic on the Twenty and the annual Smithville Fall Fair.
